Preconception- Thinking about having a baby
Pregnancy is like a journey, and just like any journey, a little preparation will go a long way!
Imagine setting off on holiday without giving your clothing, where you are staying, and travel arrangements any proper thought. Sometimes leaving everything to chance can be fun, exciting and a bit of a thrill, but in most cases lack of preparation ends up causing more anxiety and concerns than necessary.
Pregnancy can be a magical time for some and a worrying time for others. Giving a little thought to certain areas in your life will increase your likelihood of falling pregnant, and when you do, you are more likely to be able to relax and enjoy a healthy pregnancy and a healthy newborn. During the first trimester of pregnancy a baby develops faster than at any other time in its life. This is a particularly vulnerable period for the baby, especially as the mother is often not yet aware that she is pregnant.
Enjoying a healthy diet and lifestyle for 3 – 6 months before becoming pregnant will improve your mental and physical health, which will benefit both you and your baby when you conceive.
Consider the pregnancy checklist below. Think about each point and try to make any positive changes that you can, there are a number of suggestions to help you. Health aspects, such as your pre-pregnancy weight and fitness, will affect how easily you fall pregnant as well as how well your body manages during the pregnancy (whilst financial issues become increasingly stressful as you begin to feel protective towards your unborn infant for the first time).
Click on each of the links below in the Preconception Checklist to find out more. The list is not in any particular order, each point is as important as any other.
